Objective: HMI will perform a brief overview of the chargemaster (CDM)to assess code assignments, compliance, and opportunities for missed revenues. A report of findings will be provided to give a quick "snapshot" of the service areas as well as HMI's recomendations.
Review Criteria: HMI will review the hospital data against current CMS rules and regulations as well as any published fiscal intermediary requirements for specific service areas. Additionally, hospital charges are assessed against national fee schedules and current APC reimbursement rates. Also, HMI will assess how effectively the hospital is capturing charges for pharmaceuticals and radiopharmaceuticals, packaged items and bundled services.
Results: HMI will outline key areas by department that should be addressed by the hospital. We also provide recommendations for maintaining all reimbursement activities in the hospital. Key areas may include: CDM, inpatient, outpatient, and physician management.
Why take advantage of this review?
The importance of CDM maintenance is crucial to hospital reimbursement now as well as for the future. CMS/Medicare will continue to monitor hospital charges for future PPS rate setting. The services hospitals report today, will greatly impact the reimbursement methodology implemented by CMS in the next 5, 10, and 20 years.
Due to the ever-changing nature of healthcare reimbursement, contracting with an outside consulting firm on an annual basis will provide insight into opportunities that exist within a hospital's CDM. The staff responsible for federal and local updates to the CDM are typically charged with multiple hospital responsibilities, leaving them little or no time for CDM maintenance because other duties have taken priority.
Finally, HMI is providing this review at no cost or obligation. Even if a CDM review has recently been performed, this analysis is an excellent tool for monitoring the implementation of CDM changes.
